Life Notes:  Happiness is a Broom

Life Notes:  Complete List  2007  2006

Recently I purchased a new broom. As friends and family sail happily into this century with cleaning gadgets like the "swooper," I’ve remained relatively archaic in cleaning methodology, contentedly using a soft-bristled broom to sweep my laminate floor. Except for recent home renovations, I would have undoubtedly been content to sweep on into the next decade. During home renovation, upon returning home from work, I began the routine clean-up up after the contractors. Much to my bemusement, I discovered the indoor broom was requisitioned into driveway duty to clean up mortar and ceramic tile debris. Reluctantly I visited the local mega-store to replace my beloved broom.

A buffet of cleaning implements awaited me in the local mega-store cleaning aisle. Straw brooms, sponge brooms, feather brooms, and something which resembled a fabric softener stuck on a pole…all these competed for my attention. After settling on a micro-fiber broom with detachable handle, I returned home.

To my amazement, the new broom served as a picture of modern cleaning efficiency. It cut sweeping time in half, worked in corners and under furniture. After being jolted unexpectedly out of my routine, I found a solution which worked more efficiently and opened up time for new opportunities….such as mopping more frequently, and (gasp) perhaps even putting a new clear coat on the floor.

While my fun with this flooring adventure ranks insignificant in life's grander scheme, I couldn't help but ponder the possibilities for larger meaning. Frequently we muddle along, content with everyday sameness, until circumstances jolt us out of the routine. Sometimes adversity (or, in my case, a trivial inconvenience) creates new connections, relationships, and opportunities. It can inspire us to re-evaluate priorities and seek unique solutions.

In my case, the unexpected broom quest did launch my cleaning tool arsenal just a bit closer to this century. Along with the micro-fiber broom purchase, I picked up one of those white eraser block cleaning products, which also worked quite magically. Look out innovation, here I come.
